Annual report 2013

 

Mute Swan: WeBS counts of none in January, four in February, none in March, seven in October, three in November and five in December.

                     In May a pair with seven young on 28th but over the following few weeks all the young either died of natural causes or were predated.

                     In September a noteworthy flock of 13 flew North-West on 21st.

    

Whooper Swan: WeBS counts produced five on November count but none on any of the other count dates.

                            In February there were two on 1st.

                            In October ten adults on 13th, five on 24th, with15, 12 adults and 3 juveniles on 25th, eight adults on 26th,

                           43 including 4 juveniles on 28th, one of the adults was ringed and found to have been ringed at Martin Mere in 2004,

                           66 on 30th, with a pair and three young on 31st.

                           In November six on 2nd, pair with three young on 3rd with a further 16 flying south, pair with three young on 4th,

                           eight on 5th with a further 11 flying south, pair with three young on 6th and 7th, ten on 8th two pairs with three young each,

                           six on 9th, ten on 10th  two pairs with three young each, 11 on 11th eight adults and three young, 14 on 12th, 12 on 13th,

                          13 on 14th seven adults six young, pair with three young on 15th, 15 on 17th seven adults eight young,

                           pair with three young on 25th and 26th.    

                           In December one adult on 3rd.

                                                                                 

Pink-Footed Goose: WeBS counts produced no records.

                                   In January two flew west on 1st, c150 flew North-West on 5th.

                                   In February one on 4th.

                                   In March 12 flew north on 21st with two on 31st.

                                   In April one on 1st, 6th, 7th, 12th, 14th, 20th, 21st and 30th.

                                   In June two on 1st and 2nd.

                                   In September 11 on 20th, 27 on 21st, one on 22nd and ten on 28th.

                                   In October 50 flew south on 7th, 40 south on 8th, 18 north on 11th, 26 south on 16th, 26 south on 17th, 60 south on 18th,

                                  129 south on 19th, 50 south on 20th, 120 flew south and 500 flew west on 23rd, 100 south on 24th, six on 25th, four on 26th,   

                                   720 flew east on 27th, 2 on 29th.

                                   In November 260 south on 2nd, 60 south on 4th, four on 5th, one on 15th, 500 south on 16th, one on 17th, 1500 south on 22nd,

                                   five on 23rd with a further 150 west on 23rd, 450 south on 26th and 27th,

                                   In December seven on 1st, 12 flew south on 19th, 40 flew east on 22nd, with one on 28th.   

 

European White-fronted Goose: In November juvenile present from 16th to 2nd December and again on 19th December.

                                                                           

Greylag Goose: WeBS counts of 116 in January, two in February, 202 in March, none in October, 244 in November and 207 in December.

                            Other counts made were, In August 250 on 13th, 580 on 22nd and 840 on 26th.

                            In September 972 on 5th.

                           11 pairs nested 10 pairs successfully raising c40 young between them.

                                                       

Canada Goose: WeBS counts of none in January, February, March or October and one in November and December.

                            Other counts made during the year were, In February two on 20th.

                            In June four on 7th with five flying north on 18th.

                            In September one on 8th and 67 on 10th.

                            In October two on 10th, three on 14th, two on 19th and one on 22nd.

                            In November one on 10th.

                            In December one on 14th was the last report of the year.

                         

Barnacle Goose: All records probably relate to feral birds from the Humber area, with In April four flew south on 27th.

                              In September one on 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 26th 

 

Egyptian Goose: Three adults present from September 25th to October 16th, with nine, the original three being joined by six new birds on 17th

                              October, with the original three birds only again on 18th to 20th and again on 27th.

 

Shelduck: WeBS counts of 13 in January, ten in February, 21 in March, none in October, none in November and five in December.

                  Other counts made were, In January 35 on 19th, nine on 29th.

                  In February 18+ on 8th.

                  In April 67 on 25th.

                  In November two on 2nd, three on 15th, 16th, five on 24th, 26th and one on 30th.

                  In December one on 6th, five on 7th, ten on 13th, 11 on 14th, two on 17th, five on 20th, eight on 23rd, ten on 26th, 21 on 28th.

                  5 pairs nested raising a minimum of 16 young between them.

 

Mandarin Duck: Drakes seen on 16th March and 16th October.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

            

Wigeon: WeBS counts of 35 in January, 30 in February, 14 in March, 81 in October, 65 in November and 59 in December.

               Other counts made were, In January 30 on 14th.

               In February 38 on 2nd, 20+ on 8th.

               In March 10+ on 1st, 18 on 21st, 24 on 22nd, 18 on 26th.

               In April 14 on 1st, 26 on 6th, 12 on 12th, 14th,

               In July one on 15th was unseasonal.  

               In September one on 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, three on 14th, 15th, two on 17th, three on 19th, six on 21st, 22nd, nine on 24th, 31 on 25th, 20 on 27th,

               39 on 28th.

               In October 58 on 3rd, 74 on 11th, six on 19th, 74 on 20th, 65 on 26th, 35 on 27th.

               In November 110 on 2nd, 70 on 6th, 81 on 8th, 146 on 17th, 128 on 24th, 168 on 26th, 11 on 30th.   

               In December 66 on 8th, 85 on 13th and 86 on 14th.

                  

Gadwall: WeBS counts of 17 in January, 56 in February, 23 in March, 42 in October, 32 in November and 36 in December.

                Year round resident with nine pairs breeding raising 53 young between them.

                                                    

Teal: WeBS counts of 270 in January, 355 in February, 115 in March, 286 in October, 415 in November and 715 in December.

         Two males were seen in May but no evidence of breeding was observed.

 

Green-winged Teal: Drake present from 19th to 31st December. (Tony Martin/Steve Martin)

         

Mallard: WeBS counts of 69 in January, 84 in February, 41 in March, 200 in October, 147 in November and 206 in December.

              Year round resident with at least 28 pairs breeding hatching at least 122 young between them.

 

Pintail: One only seen on February and October WeBS count dates.

             In January male on 27th and 30th.  

             In February male on 2nd and 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th, 15th and 16th.

             In March one on 20th.

             In April pair on 13th, 14th, 16th, 17th and18th.

             In May male on 10th.

             In September female on 25th to 29th.  

             In October one male on 2nd to 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th , 13th, and 17th, pair on 18th, three males on 19th, one male on 20th to 23rd.

             In November two males on 23rd.   

                           

Garganey: WeBS counts produced no sightings.

                   In August two juveniles on 31st.

                   In September one juvenile on remained on 1st with one on 14th.

          

Shoveler: WeBS counts of nine in January, ten in February, 18 in March, 23 in October, 17 in November and 20 in December.

                 Highest counts made during the year were 38 on both 7th September and December 27th.

                 Year round resident with six or seven pairs bred raising 29 young between them.

 

Pochard: WeBS counts of 12 in January, 16 in February, 12 in March, seven in October, 15 in November and 45 in December.

                 Year round resident with In December 52 on 25th being the highest count made during the year.  

 

Tufted Duck: WeBS counts of 23 in January, 72 in February, 36 in March, 16 in October, 13 in November and 40 in December.

                       Year round resident with 16 pairs nesting hatching 75 young but fledging only c52 with all of the young from the Island Lake being  

                       lost to predation by a pair of Lesser-black Backed Gull’s.    

 

Common Scoter: In March four, three males and a female on 18th.

                              In July nine, eight males and one female on 22nd.

 

Goldeneye: WeBS counts of none in January, none in February, none in March, three in October, none in November and none in December.

                     Other counts made were in January female on 1st, two on 2nd, two on 4th, one on 5th, one on 24th, three females on 26th, male on 27th.

                     In February male on 2nd.

                     In June one on 20th was unseasonal.

                     In October female on 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 24th.

                     In November female on 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, with seven birds on 12th.

                     In December male on 18th, 20th and 21st, pair on 22nd, male on 24th, 26th and 27th.

 

Smew: Female present from 21st February to 2nd April, probably returning bird from previous year.

 

Goosander: In January female on 2nd, five, two males and 3 females on 4th with female on 28th.

                     In February five, 2 males and three females on 2nd, pair on 15th, three, one male and two females on 22nd, six, three pairs on 26th.

                     In March four, two pairs on 5th, two on 6th, female on 13th, three, one male and two females on 15th and18th, two females on 20th,

                     male on 22nd, four females on 25th, one female on 28th.

                     In April male on 10th and 12th with a female on 16th.

                     In October one on 18th.

                     In November male on 27th.

                     In December male on 2nd, female on 7th, four, one male and 3 females on 13th, four, three males and a female on 27th.

 

 

 

 

 

Red-legged Partridge: Year round resident on and around the reserve with some large flocks 50+ seen in autumn due to local releases for game

                                       shooting.

 

Grey Partridge: In January two on 4th with eight on 19th.

                           In February two on 17th, 20th and 24th.

                           In March one on 25th and two on 26th.

                           In April pair on 4th.

                           In May one on 11th.

                           In October 11 on 24th with 7 on 25th.

                           In November seven on 1st and seven on 10th.

                           In December two on 19th with three on 21st.

                           

Pheasant: Year round resident on and around the reserve in small numbers.

 

Red-throated Diver: Adult in full summer plumage for c2 hours on 19th April was a first record for the reserve.

 

Black-throated Diver: Juvenile present from 19th November to 21st and again from 1st to 3rd December was a first record for the reserve.

                                     

                                                                                                   

Little Grebe: WeBS counts of none in January, one in February, five in March, 11 in October, eight in November and none in December.

                      The highest count made during the year was in September with19 on 21st.

                      Six pairs bred hatching 14 young but only fledging 6 between them.

                                                             

Great Crested Grebe: WeBS counts of none in January, two in February, four in March, four in October, seven in November and three in

                                      December.

                                      One on 29th January was the first of the year.

                                      In November eight on 10th was the highest count made during the year.

                                      In December three on 6th, one on 14th, three on 17th and 20th.

                                      Only one pair attempted to nest but soon abandoned so for first time in many years no young were raised.

 

Gannet: A juvenile flew North over reserve on 13th October.

 

Cormorant: WeBS counts of none in January, February, March, one in October, none in November and five in December.

                     Other counts made during the year were, In January seven on 1st and 9 on 13th.

                     In February three on 1st.

                     In July 11 on 13th, 10 on 20th, eight on 25th.

                     In August 12 on 1st.

                     In November seven on 30th.

 

Bittern: In September one showed very well for most of the day on the 23rd and was only the third record for the reserve.  

                    

Little Egret: In May one flew south on 1st, two on 11th, and one on 17th and 26th.

                     In June one on 10th and 12th.

                     In July a colour ringed bird on 11th and 26th had been ringed at Baston Pits in Lincolnshire on 27th May 2013.

                     In August one on 4th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 20th.

                     In October one on 20th and 27th.

                     In November one on 22nd.

 

Great White Egret: One on 17th October present for only 20mins and was a first record for the reserve.

                    

Grey Heron: In January one south on 17th.

                      In June one on 23rd, 25th and 26th.

                      In July one on 4th, two on 6th, one on 9th, 13th, 20th, 21st, 25th, two on 26th, one on 27th.

                      In August one on 9th, two on 10th, one on 11th, 13th, one on 20th, 22nd, two on 25th.

                      In September one on 6th, 22nd, 27th, flock of ten flew south on 29th.

                      In December two on 7th.

                   

Red Kite: In February one on 8th and 23rd.

                 In March three on 14th, one on 20th, three on 24th and one on 31st.

                 In April one on 1st, 21st, two on 22nd and one on 30th.

                 In May one on 1st, 23rd, 24th, 25th.

                 In June one on 1st, 9th, 10th.

                 In July one on 5th and 28th.

                 In August one on 31st.

                 In September one on 30th.

                 In October one on 5th.

                 In November one on 19th.

Marsh Harrier: In January female on 25th.

                          In February one on 11th, 15th and 17th.

                          In March male on 8th, one on 24th.

                          In July one on 14th, with a male flying north on 28th.

                          In August female on 30th and 31st.

                          In September one on 3rd, 14th, with a male on 30th.

                          In October one on 6th, 13th and 19th.

                          In November male on 5th, one on 12th, male and female on 19th, male on 20th, two males flew south on 22nd.

                          In December one on 3rd, immature male on 14th, female on 15th, male on 18th, one on 21st, 24th and 26th.

                          two on 28th immature and female.

 

Hen Harrier: In January female flew west on 14th with a male flying South on 23rd.

                      In February male on 13th.

                      In March male on 13th.

                      In October a ring-tail flew West on 23rd.

                                             

Sparrowhawk: Seen on and off throughout the year mainly single birds seen two together on occasions.

 

Buzzard: Seen in every month of the year with up to six birds at time seen in the spring with up to a dozen birds seen in the air together in autumn.

 

Kestrel: Seen in every month of the year usually single birds but up to four birds seen in the air together displaying in spring.  

 

Merlin: In January one on 12th.

             In February male flew south on 28th.

             In September a juvenile on 2nd.

             In November one on 11th and 26th.

            

Hobby: In April one on 30th was the first of the year.

             In May one on 4th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 23rd and  27th.

             In June one on 22nd and 23rd.

             In August one on 11th, 17th and 31st.

             In September two on 7th, two juveniles on 8th and one on 14th, 15th, 17th, 22nd and 30th.

            

Peregrine: In January one on 1st, 4th, 17th and 19th.

                   In February one on 3rd, 4th and 27th.

                   In March one on 1st and 8th.

                   In April one on 4th, 5th, 6th, 10th, 11th, 15th, 21st and 28th.

                   In May one on 4th.

                   In June one on 5th and 22nd.

                   In July one on 27th and 28th.

                   In August one on 5th, 9th and 11th.

                   In September one on 4th, 19th, 20th and 30th.

                   In October one on 4th, 20th, 23rd, 24th and 27th.

                   In November one on 1st, female on 3rd, male on 4th, one on 12th and 26th.   

                   In December one on 7th and 8th with two on 9th, one on 14th, 15th, 17th, 21st, 23rd, 26th, 27th and 28th.

 

Water Rail: In January one on 1st, 5th, 19th, two on 20th, one on 25th and 30th.

                    In February one on 2nd.

                    In March one on 3rd, 26th and 29th.

                    In April one on 13th and 17th.

                    In August one on 17th and 20th.

                    In September one on 25th.

                    In October one on 16th and18th with two on 19th.

                    In November one on 7th, two on 10th, one on 12th, 25th, 26th, 27th and 30th.

                    In December one on 4th, 7th, 13th, 15th and 28th.

 

Moorhen: WeBS counts of 11 in January, seven in February, 30 in March, 31 in October, 22 in November and 18 in December.

                 Between12 and 15 pairs bred raising 20+ between them.

 

Coot: WeBS counts of 113 in January, 94 in February, 51 in March, 135 in October, 147 in November and 118 in December.

           Year round resident on the reserve with at least 18 pairs breeding.

 

Oystercatcher: WeBS counts of none in January, three in February, 13 in March, none in October, November or  December.

                          In February one on 3rd was the first of the year, three on 15th, seven on 16th, 10+ on 17th and 16 on 20th.

                          In March 12 on 1st, 18 on 5th and 26 on 6th.

                          In December one on 18th was the last sighting of the year.

                          Seven pairs bred hatching 10 and fledging seven.

 

 

 

 

                      

Avocet: In March two on 6th were the first of the year with one on 16th, 17th, two on 20th, 11 on 21st, one on 25th, 21 on 28th, seven on 29th,

             18 on 30th, 24 on 31st.

             In April 20+ on 1st, two on 5th, 32 on 7th, six on 12th, 40 on 13th.

             In May 25 pairs on 1st, 28 pairs on 24th, two pairs with young + 28 pair nesting on 28th.

             In June 12 young seen on 19th, six young on 21st, nine young on 22nd, six young on 26th, four young on 28th, six young on 29th,

             eight young on 30th.  

             In July five young on 2nd, eight young on 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10+ on 12th, 15 young on 16th, 17 young on 20th, 11 young  on 21st,

            12 young on 23rd,15 young on 27th, nine young on 31st.

             In August 10 young on 3rd, nine on 2nd, 10 on 6th, three on 13th, two on 15th and 18th, adult with one young on 19th, 20th, 27th with two adults

             and one young on 31st.

             In September adult and juvenile present from 1st till last seen on 8th.

             A total of 43 pairs bred or attempted to breed on the reserve, the majority of chicks that did hatched were lost due to predation but at least           

            12 chicks survive to fledge.

Little Ringed Plover: In March two on 27th were the first of the year and present to the end of the month with four on 30th.

                                    In April two on 2nd, three on 4th, four on 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th.

                                    In May a pair with four young on 30th plus another two pairs nesting.

                                    In July pair with four young on 25th.  

                                    In August juvenile on 20th, 22nd, 30th and 31st.

                                    In September juvenile on 1st, 3rd, 5th, 12th, 13th, two on 15th, one on 16th, 17th, two on 18th, one on 21st, 22nd, 23rd,

                                    two juveniles on 25th, 27th, one on 28th and 30th.

                                    In October one on 2nd, 4th till last seen on10th.

                                    Four or five pairs in total attempted to breed with three being successful raising

                                     

Ringed Plover: In February one on 16th was the first of the year.

                          In March one on 2nd, 9th, 10th and 12th, with five on 16th, two on 21st and 22nd, four on 25th, one on 26th, two on 27th to 31st.

                          In April two on 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th and10th, three on 12th.

                          In May one on 27th.

                          In August one on 1st, 22nd and 24th.

                          A pair either bred on site or nearby as in September juvenile was seen  on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th, two adult and juvenile on 12th,

                          one adult on 13th, four on 14th,  two on 15th, one on17th, 23rd and finally on 27th being the last sighting of the year.

                                                                     

Golden Plover: In January one on 6th was the first sighting of the year with one on 23rd and three on 26th.

                          In February 25 flew north on 2nd.

                          In August 30 south on 22nd, five on 24th, 14 on 25th, 45 on 28th, two on 29th, and 14 on 30th.

                          In September 65+ on 3rd, 15 on 4th, 40 on 6th, 80+ on 7th, 44 on 10th, six on 11th, 14th, 13 on 23rd, 250+ on 24th, two on 27th, 200+

                          over on 30th.

                          In October 48 south on 4th, 50 south on 20th, 61 south on 22nd, 60 south on 26th.

                          In November 35 south on 7th and  43 south on 26th,

                          In December 120 south on 14th, 30 south on 15th, one south on 17th, 100 south on 19th and finally nine south on 24th.

 

Grey Plover: One on 28th July was the only sighting of the year.

 

Lapwing: : WeBS counts of 137 in January, 247 in February, 116 in March, 119 in October, 153 in November and 131 in December.

                   Other counts made during the year were in July 140 on 15th.

                   In August 156 on 26th.

                   Three pairs bred with one pair failing and the the other two pair raising five young.

 

Sanderling: In May five on 29th and 30th.

                     In July one on 14th.

 

Little Stint: In June one on 8th was the first of the year.

                    In September one on 7th.

 

Curlew Sandpiper: In August four on 25th.

                                 In September two juveniles on 3rd, with three juveniles on 21st and two on 27th.

                                                                                                                                                

Dunlin: In January one on 14th.

             In March three on 9th, one on 10th, 12th, 18th, two on 20th, one on 22nd.

             In April one on 10th, 11th, two on 12th, 14th, 12 on 15th, two on 17th, 18th, 19th, one on 20th, 21st.

             In May two on 3rd, four on 4th, two on 7th, three on 8th, one on 11th, five on 13th, one on 26th, 29th.

             In July one six on 14th, two on 20th, one on 23rd, 26th, 27th, two on 29th, one on 31st.

             In August one on 10th, 10 on 12th, five on 25th, one on 26th.

             In September one on 7th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 24th, 25th, 26th, three on 27th, four on 28th, six on 29th and 30th.

             In October one on 11th, two on 13th with 40 flying over as well, one on 16th and 17th.

             In November a flock of 20 flew north on 22nd.

Ruff: In April one on 18th was the first of the year with two on 28th and 30th.

         In May two on 2nd, 3rd to 6th.

         In July two on 31st.

         In September one on 3rd, 7th, 11th and12th,  three on 25th, one on 26th, 27th to 30th.

         In October one on 12th and 24th.

 

Jack Snipe: WeBS Counts of none in January, February, March or October, six in November and five in December.

                     Other sightings were one on 15th September which was the first of the year with one also seen on 17th and 29th.

                     In October one on 16th and 18th and six on 19th.

                     In December one on 2nd.

 

Snipe: WeBS Counts of eight in January, five in February, none in March, five in October, five in November and ten in December.

            Other counts made were In January two on 17th.

            In February ten on 25th.

            In March 20+ on 5th, one on 20th with 10+ on 21st.

            In July one on 18th, two on 20th, one on 29th.

            In August six on 8th and 23 on 30th.

 

Woodcock: In January one on 20th, 22nd and 23rd.

                    In March one on 26th.

                    In November one on 15th.

                    In December one on 8th.

                                                                   

Black-Tailed Godwit: In April two on 7th were the first of the year, with one on 8th to13th, seven on 15th and16th, five on 17th and18th,

                                    seven on 19th and 20th, 11 on 21st, five on 22nd, nine on 24th, two on 25th, 39 on 26th, 11 on 27th, one on 29th and 30th.

                                    In May one on 3rd, 24th to 28th, 30th and 31st.

                                    In July one on 2nd and16th, 11 flew north on 21st, one on 26th and 27th, two on 28th, one on 29th and two on 30th.

                                    In August three on 11th, one on 17th, 19 on 18th with 18 of those flying south, eight on 22nd, four on 24th and 25th,

                                   16 on 26th with another two flying west and three on 27th.

                                   In September one on 14th, 15th and 21st.

                                   In November two on 5th and one on 20th.

                                   In December one on 14th.

                                                           

Bar-tailed Godwit: In April one on 3rd was the first of the year with one on 17th and 18th.

                                In May one on 11th, 12th, 13th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 21st and 22nd.  

 

Whimbrel: In April one heard only on 15th was the first of the year with 12 on 20th and one on 29th.

                   In May one on 3rd, six on 4th, one on 5th, two on 8th, three on 10th, 17 on 11th, 21 on 12th, 10 on 13th, six on 16th, 12+ on 18th,

                   four on 20th, six on 21st, three on 22nd, one on 26th and 28th.

                   In June one on 4th and 6th.

                   In July one on 6th, 8th and 12th with three on 24th.

                   In September one on 4th and 5th.    

 

Curlew: In January 15 on 26th.

              In February 11 on 16th and nine on 25th.

              In March one flew south on 18th.

              In April 33 flew east on 1st, 40 + on 5th and 70+ on 6th.

              In May 10 on 12th, seven on 13th, 10 on 16th, 20+ on 18th, 24 on 20th, 20+ on 21st, 10 on 22nd.

              In July 60 flew south on 21st.

              In September 30+ flew south on 4th.

              In October 23 south on 17th.

              In November eight flew north on 26th.

                        

Redshank: WeBS Counts of 30 in January, 31 in February, 19 in March, three in October, one in November and four in December.

                    Other counts made were in January 54 on 4th, 32 on 9th, 70 on 14th, 17 on 27th, 41 on 29th and 30 on 30th.

                    In February 44+ on 2nd and 25+ on 8th.

                    In May a pair with four young on 26th.

                    In June three juveniles on 23rd with an adult and juvenile (2nd pair) on 30th.

                    In September one on 1st, six on 14th, one on 27th and 28th.

                    In October one on 6th and two on 11th,  

                    In December one on 7th and seven on 13th.

 

Turnstone: One on 7th to 10th May was the first of the year with one also on 30th.  

              

Greenshank: In May one on 7th was the first of the year, with one on 10th.

                       In July one on 7th, 10th.

                       In August one on 4th, 6th, 7th, 14th, 16th, four on 22nd and 23rd.

 

 

 

 

 

                      

Green Sandpiper: In January one on 2nd and 13th.

                               In March one on 9th.

                               In April one on 13th.

                               In May one on 11th and 12th.

                               In June one on 8th and 19th.

Wood Sandpiper: In May one on 7th was the first of the year with also being seen on 8th, 10th and 11th.

 

Common Sandpiper: In April one on 13th was the first of the year with one on 14th, two on 15th, one on 16th, 17th and 18th, two on 19th, one on 20th,

                                    two on 27th, one on 28th, 29th, and two on 30th.

                                    In May two on 5th, one on 6th, three on 7th, two on 10th, 11th, one on 12th, 16th, 17th, three on 18th, one on 19th, 21st, 25th and

                                    26th.

                                    In June one on 8th, 9th and 14th.

                                    In July one on 3rd, 5th, 6th, 16th and 17th, two on 19th, one on 20th, two on 21st, one on 23rd, 25th, 28th, 29th and 30th.

                                    In August one on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th, two on 10th, one on 11th, two on 13th, one on 14th, two on 15th, one on 16th,

                                    two on 17th, one on 18th, two on 19th, 20th and 22nd, three on 24th and 25th, two on 27th, 29th, and one on 31st.

                                    In September one on 1st, 4th and 7th, four on 8th, two on 9th, 10th, 11th and 13th, three on 14th, one on 15th, two on 16th, one on

                                    17th and 21st, two on 22nd, one on 23rd and 24th, two on 25th, and  final report of the year being one on 28th.

 

Kittiwake: In May an impressive flock of c50 birds (90% adults) flew in from west near dusk on 22nd and spent c 15mins feeding before nearly all

                  the birds flew  off east leaving just an adult and a first summer remaining till dark.

 

Little Gull: In April adult summer on 18th was the first of the year with two adult summer birds on 19th and 20th, one on 21st, two on 22nd.

                   In June two first summer on 5th, four first summers on 6th, one second summer on 9th.

                   In July a first summer on 7th.

                   

Black-headed Gull: Year round resident on the reserve with at least 960 pairs breeding, raising an average of two chicks each.

 

Mediterranean Gull: In March a 2nd winter on 12th was the first of the year with a first winter bird on 24th.

                                   In April two second summer birds on 19th and 21st.

                                   In May first summer on 4th, 15th, 22nd and 26th.

                                   In June first summer on 4th, 8th, 9th and10th, three first summer on 14th, one first summer on 15th to17th, two a first summer  

                                   and a second summer on 18th, one first summer on 19th and 21st to 30th.

                                   In July the first summer again on 2nd and 4th, adult summer on 7th.

                                   In August adult on 28th.    

 

Common Gull: Year round resident on and around the reserve in varying numbers with up to 200 birds seen at times.

 

Herring Gull: Seen in small numbers in every month of the year with counts of 100+ seen occasionally in pre-roost gatherings during the autumn.

 

Yellow-legged Gull: A German ringed juvenile was seen on 21st April.

                                  In May the same bird was seen again on 8th, 10th, 11th and 15th.  

 

Iceland Gull: First winter seen on 2nd March.

                                 

Lesser Black-backed Gull: Seen in small numbers in every month of the year with occasional large gatherings of up to 200 birds in autumn.

                                             

Greater Black-backed Gull: Seen in small numbers in every month of the year with occasional large gatherings the highest of which was 200+ on

                                               23rd March.

                                              

Little Tern: One present from c4pm till 7pm on 3rd July.

 

Sandwich Tern: Two birds flew south over the car park on 14th April.

 

Common Tern: In April one flew south on 14th and was the first of the year with two on 28th and 29th.

                           In May two on 7th, one on 8th, 10th, 10+ on 11th, 12th, 12+ on 13th, 17 on 16th, 2 pairs on 17th, 13 on 18th, nine on 21st, 15+ on 22nd,

                           eight on 24th.

                           In June pair with three young on 22nd, six young on 30th.

                           In July two young on 20th, nine on 25th.

                           In August 18 inc four young on 1st, six young on 4th, adult with juvenile on 18th and 19th.

                           Ten pairs attempted to nest but most failed due to predation of nests, but two pair were successful managing to raise five

                           young between them.

 

 

 

Arctic Tern: In May two on 13th were the first of the year with in October a juvenile present from 14th to 20th.  

 

Stock Dove: Seen on and off throughout the year with notable counts in January of ten on 11th and 16 on 27th

              

Woodpigeon: Year round resident on and around the reserve with large flocks of several hundred in surrounding fields during autumn and winter

                        months, at least one pair bred on the reserve.

                      

Cuckoo: In June one heard singing on 21st was the only report of the year.

                                                 

Barn Owl: In January one on 9th, 11th and 28th.

                  In February one on 2nd, 9th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 17th, 18th, 21st, 22nd, 24th and 27th.

                  In March one on 2nd, 4th, 8th, 13th, 14th, 20th and 27th.

                  In April one on 19th and 20th.

                  In May one on 9th, 19th, 20th and 21st.

                  In June one on 18th, two on 22nd.

                  In July one on 19th and 25th.

                  In August one on 6th.

                  In September one on 17th.

                  In December one on 15th.

                  No evidence of breeding this year.

 

Short-eared Owl: In January one on 19th.

                              In March one on 2nd.

                              In May one on 6th.

                         

Tawny Owl: In January one on 15th, 23rd and 28th.

                     In February one on 21st and 22nd.

                     In April one on 10th and 11th.

 

Little Owl: In January two on 2nd, one on 20th and 26th.

                   In May one on 22nd.  

 

Swift: In April one on 21st was the first of the year.

           The last of the year was one of 12th August.

           

Kingfisher: in January one on 12th.

                    In February one on 8th,14th, 17th, 18th and 24th.

                    In June two on 2nd.

                    In July one on 14th.

                    In August one on 6th, 8th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 20th, 21st, 24th, two on 30th and one on 31st.

                    In September one on 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th, two on 8th, one on 9th, 11th, 12th, two on 13th, three on 14th, one on 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 20th, 22nd,

                    24th and 25th, two on 26th, one on 27th and 28th.

Green Woodpecker: In January two on 1st, one on 6th, two on 15th, one on 20th, 22nd and 23rd.

                                   In March one on 1st, 30th and 31st.

                                   In April one on 13th and 17th with two on 23rd.

                                   In May two on 29th.

                                   In June two on 2nd, one on 8th and 15th.

                                   In July one on 6th and 11th with three on 21st.

                                   In August one on 18th.

                                   In September one on 8th, 24th and 30th.

                                   In October one on 9th, 16th, 17th, 21st and 26th.

                                   In November one on 2nd, 5th, 7th and 23rd.

                                   In December one on 1st, 7th, 13th, 14th, 17th, 19th, 21st and 26th.

                                   

Great Spotted Woodpecker: Seen on and off throughout the year usually just single birds but two together seen on occasions, In June adult and                  

                                                 juvenile seen on 25th.

               

Skylark: Seen on and off throughout the year with notable counts seen being, in January 60+ south on 14th and 70+ on 20th.

 

Sand Martin: One on 7th April was the first of the year with three on 10th, 14+ on 11th and 25+ by the 12th.

                       In June 117 nest holes were found to be occupied.

                       In October two on 6th were the last of the year.

                         

Swallow: One on 10th April was the first of the year with two on 11th and 10+ on 12th.

                 In October four south on 4th, two south on 5th, and final report of the year was one south on 6th.   

                

House Martin: Six+ on 13th April were the first of the year.

                         In October four on 10th were the last of the year.

 

Meadow Pipit: In January one on 4th was the first of the year.

                         Some notable counts during the rest of the year were, In September 10+ on 4th, 27 on 19th and  20+ on 22nd.

                         In October 11 on 2nd.

 

Rock Pipit: Two on 23rd March with one on 29th and two on 31st.

                    In April three on 2nd and one on 8th.

 

Yellow Wagtail: One on 11th April was the first of the year with three on 12th, 11+ on 13th, 16+ on 14th, 40+ on 15th, 30+ on 17th, 25+ on 18th,

                           40+ on 19th, 16 on 22nd,   20+ on 24th, 25+ on 26th, 40+ on 27th.

                           In May 35+ on 1st, 40+ on 2nd, 3rd, 25+ on 4th, one on 6th, two on 12th and 15th, one on 24th.

                           In June one on 29th.

                           In July three on 11th, two on 23rd, one on 27th.

                           In August five on 3rd, two on 8th, seven on 10th, 11 on 11th, four on 13th, eight on 14th, one on 16th, five on 18th, three on 19th, 22nd,

                           two on 30th.

                           In September one on 10th, 13th, five on 14th, one on 15th, 16th, two on 19th and final report of the year being one on 22nd.

 

Blue-headed Wagtail: Two on 26th April.

 

Grey Wagtail: In January one on 14th.

                        In August two on 28th.

                        In September two on 19th, one on 27th and two on 28th.

                        In October one on 4th, 6th, 10th, 16th and 18th, three on 19th, one on 26th.

                        In November one on 2nd, 10th, 15th and 24th.

                        In December one on 21st and 24th.

 

Pied Wagtail: Year round resident on the reserve with the odd pair breeding. 

                        Notable counts made were, in April 50+ on 12th and15th.

                        In September 50+ on 14th with 30+ on 15th.

 

White Wagtail: In April one on 2nd, 13th, 14th and 15th with four on 17th.

 

Waxwing: In February 11 on 14th and 10 on 16th.  

 

Wren: Year round resident on the reserve in small numbers with the odd pair breeding.

 

Dunnock: Year round resident on the reserve with a few pairs breeding.

 

Robin: Year round resident on the reserve with a few pairs breeding.

 

Whinchat: One on 14th September was only sighting of the year.

 

Stonechat: Female on 12th March was only sighting of the year.

                 

Wheatear: In April one on 14th was the first of the year with one on 28th.

                  In May one on 5th and 6th.

                  In September one on 14th, 16th and 17th.

 

Ring Ouzel: In April a male on 20th and 21st with another or same male again on 1st May.

 

Fieldfare: In January 30+ on 18th.

                 In February 50+ on 23rd.

                 In March 200+on 23rd.

                 In April 50+ on 5th and 6th.

                 In October 20 on 20th.

                 In November one on 3rd and 50 on 25th,

                 In December 200+ on 1st, 60+ on 6th, 200+ on 13th and 50+ on 20th.

 

Blackbird: Blackbird: Year round resident on the reserve with a few pairs breeding, a high count of 35+ on 1st December.

                                   

Song Thrush: Year round resident on the reserve with at least one pair breeding.

 

Redwing: In April one on 1st.

                 In October 12 on 12th.

                 In November ten on 25th.

                 In December 10+ on 1st, 5+ on 20th.

 

Mistle Thrush: In January one on 15th, 18th, with three+ on 26th.

                         In October one on 21st.

                         In December two on 25th.

 

Sedge Warbler: In April two on 20th were the first of the year with two+ on 28th.

                           The last of the year was seen on September.   

                           At least six pairs bred.

 

 

Reed Warbler: In April two on 27th were the first of the year.

                          In October one on 6th was the last sighting of the year.

                          At least11 pairs bred in the reserves reedbeds.

 

Treecreeper: One on 2nd November was only sighting of the year.

                                                                           

Lesser Whitethroat: In April two on 20th were the first of the year with three on 27th.

                                   In August three on 14th were the last reported for the year.

                                   At least two pairs bred.

                                                                       

Whitethroat: In April two on 19th were the first of the year.

                      In September one on 14th was the last report for the year.

                      Four or five pairs bred.

                     

Garden Warbler: In May one on 2nd was the first of the year.

                             In September one on 28th was the last report of the year.

                             One pair was suspected to have bred.

                      

Blackcap: In April one on 15th was the first of the year, with six plus on the reserve by the 27th.

                  In December female on 21st was the last report.

                  At least  four pairs bred on the reserve..

 

Chiffchaff: One on 21st March was the first of the year with one on 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 28th, two on 30th and one on 31st.

                   In April one on 3rd, two on 5th, three on 7th, six on 9th, 12th.

                   In May one on 27th.

                   In September one on 8th, 14th, 15th, four+ on 18th, one on 22nd.

                   In October one on 10th, two on 12th, one on 13th.

                   In November one on 2nd was the last report of the year.

                   At least one pair bred.

 

Willow Warbler: In April at least three on 13th were the first of the year, then seen regularly throughout the summer with at least two pairs

                            breeding.

                            In September one on14th  was the last sighting of the year.

                     

Goldcrest: In January one on 2nd and 23rd.

                   In April one on 15th.

                   In October two on 16th, five on 17th, one on 26th and three on 29th.

                   In November one on 7th, 10th and 12th, two on 13th, one on 15th, 24th and 26th.

                   In December one on 3rd and 6th, two on 7th, one on 8th, two on 13th and 14th with one on 24th.

                  

Spotted Flycatcher: In May one on 19th was the only report of the year.

 

Long-tailed Tit: Year round resident on and around the reserve. One or two pairs bred.

 

Blue Tit: Year round resident on the reserve with at least 5 pairs using nest boxes on the reserve.

 

Great Tit: Year round resident on the reserve with at least 3 pairs using nest boxes on the reserve.

 

Coal Tit: In January one on 12th.

               In February one on 17th.

               In September one on 28th.

               In November one on 25th.

               In December one on 24th.

             

Willow Tit: In July one on 6th, 7th, 11th, 14th and 26th.

 

Marsh Tit: In October one on 10th, 16th, 17th, 20th and 21st.

                  In November three on 1st, two on 2nd, one on 11th and 23rd.

                  In December one on 20th.

 

Jay: In January one on 23rd.

        In February two on 17th and one on 24th.

        In March one on 30th.

        In April one on 29th.

        In September one flew west on 8th with one on 14th.

 

Magpie: Year round resident on and around the reserve in small numbers with at least one pair breeding.

 

Jackdaw: Year round resident on and around the reserve in varying numbers with some large pre roost gatherings during the winter months.

 

Rook: Year round resident on and around the reserve in varying numbers with some large pre roost gatherings during the winter months.

 

 

 

Carrion Crow: Year round resident on and around the reserve with one pair raising three young.

 

Starling: Year round resident on and around the reserve.

                In November c5000 flew south on 22nd.

                In December roost of c1000 birds on 7th, 13th, 19th and 27th.

 

House Sparrow: An increasingly common resident on the reserve, mainly centered on the reserve entrance where birds take advantage of

                            the presence of ‘The Wild Bird’ café and the free handouts, flocks of up to 30 seen at times with adults feeding young indicating

                            birds are now breeding either on or near the reserve.

  

Tree Sparrow: Large winter flock of 120+ birds seen on 20th January, up to 5 pairs bred in the reserves nest boxes.

                                                                                                                                                                      

Chaffinch: Year round resident in small numbers with a few pair breeding on the reserve.

 

Brambling: in January one on 23rd, 27th and 29th.

                    In December two on 7th.  

                   

Greenfinch: Year round resident in small numbers with one or two pairs breeding on the reserve.

 

Goldfinch: Year round resident in small numbers with a few pair breeding on the reserve.

 

Siskin: In January ten+ on 1st, 50+ on 4th, 5th, 6th and 12th, 30+ on 20th, one on 24th, six on 25th, seven on 29th and six on 30th.

             In February 10+ on 16th and 20th.

             In March six+ on 1st, one on 16th and nine on 19th.

             In October ten on 6th, one on 18th, two on 20th, ten on 24th, 20 on 26th and ten on 27th.

             In November ten on 2nd, 15 on 5th, ten on 8th, 15 on 16th and one on 30th.

             In December one on 7th, 20 on 13th, six on 26th and 28th.

          

Linnet: Present on and off throughout and in every month of the year in small numbers with 60+ on 26th March being a notable flock count.

      

Lesser Redpoll: In January 100+ on 1st, 80+ on 2nd, 50+on 4th, 10+ on 6th, six+ on 12th, two on 23rd, seven on 24th, two on 25th, one on 26th 

                            In February 25+ on 1st, two on 16th, five on 20th, two on 22nd, 50+ on 24th, two on 28th.

                            In March 30+ on 1st, one on 3rd, two on 9th, three+ on 15th, 16th, one on 31st.

                            In April 50+ flew south on 20th.

                            In October one on 9th and five on 26th.

                            In November five on 8th and four on 16th.

                            In December two on 7th, five on 8th, two on 15th, one on 25th and 28th.

 

Bullfinch: In January two on 4th, one on 6th, two on 8th, four on 11th, 12th, 15th and 19th, two on 22nd, one on 23rd.

                  In February three+ on 1st, pair on 13th.

                  In March a pair on 18th. 

                  In May one on 25th.

                  In June two on 18th one on 29th.

                  In July male on 13th.

                  In August one on11th, 28th with a pair on 31st.

                  In September pair on 1st, three on 11th and 19th.

                  In October one on 26th.

                  In November one on 12th, pair on 25th, seven on 26th and three on 27th.

                  In December two on 1st, 2nd and 3rd, one on 6th, male on 15th, male and two females on 20th,  male and five females on 21st,

                  pair on 23rd, one on 24th and 25th, three on 26th.

                  Pair probably bred as one young seen on 10th August.

              

Yellowhammer: A scarce species around the reserve nowadays with, In January two on 17th and one on 26th.

                            In March three on 23rd.

                            In October one on 8th and three on 27th.

                           

Reed Bunting: Year round resident on the reserve in small numbers with up to six pairs breeding.

 

Corn Bunting: In January one on 7th and five on 8th.

                         In February two on 16th.

                         In April two on 5th, one on 6th, two on 7th and one on 20th.

                         In May two on 16th, one on 23rd and 24th with two on 31st.

                         In June one on 1st, two on 2nd, one on 7th, 8th and 9th, two on 16th, one on 21st, 22nd and 28th.

                         In July one on 4th, 6th and 7th plus12th to 16th, 19th and 27th.

                         In August three on 7th with two on 9th.

                         In September one on 1st and 21st.

                         In October three on 6th and two on 20th,

                         In December one on 7th, two on 15th, 18th with one on 24th.

                        Two pairs bred on the north side of reserve.
